Trinity has been worshipping at 6800 Washington for almost 60 years. Our community of faith has changed and evolved over these years, as has our building. When Kingshighway Presbyterian and 1st United Presbyterian merged in 1953 to form Trinity, they renovated the lower level into a church school and added an elevator. These structures have remained largely unchanged to this day. More recently, capital campaigns led to the installation of our beautiful pipe organ and the transformation of the chapel to the flexible and comfortable meeting space that we now know.

Imagine our church today if these capital projects had not occurred. Our spiritual lives, and our chance to build relationships with each other, have been immeasurably enriched by the foresight of those who came before us. Our space gives us flexibility and a central location from which we can reach out to others. In addition to our Sunday morning activities, the church hosts more than 70 hours a week of meetings, music lessons and community projects for 14 organizations as well as a food pantry that served more than 1,700 people last year.

Now it is our turn to build for the future. Our church is in need of some major structural and functional repairs so that we can continue to be a welcoming, vibrant community for coming generations.

Restore and Renew: A Campaign for Trinity Presbyterian Church
After the Physical Changes; Accessibility, Part 2
[Trinity]
I am stealing part of the newsletter from my father's Chicago church because they, like us, are working on not only the physical accessibility of their sanctuary (a few steps ahead of us), but on how to truly welcome the people. The "Pastor's Column" is on the front page--with the picture of the man with the goofy smile (hi, dad)
Restore & Renew Campaign: One Year Later
[Trinity]

We are reaching the one year anniversary of our capital campaign and members will be receiving a letter shortly with financial and construction updates. We have already received 62% of the $473,746 pledged--thank you! If you made a multi-year pledge, we thank you in advance for your continued payments over the final 2 years of the campaign.

"It is Finished": The Flooring, That Is
[Trinity]

The flooring has been finished in the Dining Room and the Children's area and vinyl baseboard will be installed starting April 4th.

The older adults in the OASIS band have expressed how grateful they are for the elevator and automatic door: "This is the best thing you've ever done!" said the woman with the walker.

A final renovation note: Our lower Kingsland and lower sanctuary doors have been painted to match our front doors.

Flooring Has Started; Building Needs TLC
[Trinity]

New flooring is being laid in the main Children's Center this week and the Dining Room next week. As more pledges are paid, the Oversight Team will consider completing more children's area flooring.

  • Our church was built in 1922 and your yearly pledges help us not only staff the building and run programs, but maintain the structure that let's us live out our mission. Current priorities in Facilities' multi-year plan include an aging A/C system and lighting technology that will be defunct by 2012-13. Many other issues are also being addressed. Thank you for your pledges.
Building & Construction Updates
[Trinity]
  • New flooring will be placed in the main Children's Center room and the Dining Room starting the week of March 21. The process should take a few weeks. The trim will come after April 1st.
  • The windows in the tower will replaced within the next 3-4 weeks, as a planned part of the Restore & Renew Campaign.
  • Spring means time for repairs. Facilities is preparing to repair guttering, kitchen roofing and stairs.
Building & Construction Updates
[Trinity]
  • New flooring will be placed in the main Children's Center room and the Dining Room starting the week of March 21.
  • The Dining Room wall by the windows will be built out to cover the ongoing water seepage from the ground.
  • the new gutters that came down in the ice storm have been replaced at no cost
  • Facilities is aware of and addressing the pebble stair issues and the movement of the center section of the front stairs
  • IF YOU HAVE A KEY FOR the Kingsland Ave. door, it will work again after this next Monday or Tuesday, when the door will be re-keyed to match our keys.
Cross Mosaic
[Trinity]

When we repainted the Dining Room last week (check it out if you haven't been down there--although it will look even better when the new flooring is in), in order to have even paint coverage, we had to paint over the "cross mosaic" that was on the north wall of the Dining Room. The mosaic was painted by Jan Hawks, Kitty Kirk, Kim Merritt, Megan Merritt and Do Kirk. They painted the mosaic to enliven the space for worship when we moved our services downstairs during the pipe organ renovation. For the five years that the mosaic was in the Dining Room we were blessed by its presence. And all who worshiped there will continue to be blessed by the artistic generosity of the Kirk/Hawks/Merritt family!

Flooring to be Laid this Month
[Trinity]

New flooring will be placed in the main Children's Center room and the Dining Room in March. The schedule will be shared once materials have acclimated to the rooms. And the Dining Room wall by the windows will be built out to cover the ongoing water seepage from the ground.

Painting Finished in Dining Room & Stairwell
[Trinity]

In anticipation of the re-flooring of the Dining Room in a few weeks, we have painted the room a warm "Divine White," using some money from our memorial funds to beautify the space. This was approved by Session. The central stairwell and areas near the two lower elevator landings was also painted.

A Huge Thank You to the Men in My Life
[Trinity]
I must thank a handful of men who masterminded the construction project and were there every step of the way: Mark O'Bryan, the architect with the vision; Reed Evans, the contractor consultant for my million questions; Bob Little, with his wonderful persepective and ideas, and --last but not least-- Don Twellman, who helped 4 days a week, week in and week out in the office, making calls and coordinating contractors.
And We have Liftoff!
[Trinity]

The elevator and the gathering area project passed all inspections this morning (1/5) --we can start using it on Sunday.

And, before you give me the list--yes, we know there are still little things to finish! Installing baseboards in the bathrooms, covering white trim in the doorways, touching up paint in a few places. And furniture will help in the Gathering space. Still, check out the transformation this Sunday when Christine Chen has the inaugural ride she won at the raffle and then on the 16th, Elevator Dedication Sunday. A huge thanks to Mark O'Bryan, Don Twellman, Reed Evans and Bob Little, who provided wisdom and guidance throughout the process.

"Where is the dark hallway & library? Look at this space!"

Final Flourishes of the Construction Project
[Trinity]

The gathering area walls are painted, the flooring will be laid upstairs starting the 27th, and the cab will be finished for a Jan. 4th inspection. All work is due to be finished by the end of the first week of January. Stay tuned for the date of our elevator dedication.

Elevator is Moving; Flooring & Painting Starting
[Trinity]

The elevator platform is moving between floors and contractors are preparing to paint walls and lay flooring upstairs next week. Otis will complete the elevator by the 24th and all work is due to be finished by the end of the first week of January.

Construction Update: Gathering Area
[Trinity]
The new gathering area is coming together--ceiling, lighting, arches. The shaft will be completed soon and the elevator will be delivered on Dec. 6. NOTE: electricity will be off to the heat (3-phase power) part of the day Wednesday, Dec. 8 to connect the new electrical box to the elevator engine room. Staff will still be present. Our website has a number of construction pictures.
The Elevator is Here & the Budget Has Decreased
[Trinity]

We are getting closer-the elevator arrived in many pieces on Monday and will be installed over the next few weeks, as the walls and flooring are finished upstairs and in front of the elevator doors in the basement. Financially, we are closing the gap between pledges made and the amount we need to complete all of our projects (minus the basement bathroom update, which the Oversight Team has decided to forgo). While our initial campaign goal was $527,500, we now need $472,155 by our latest calculations and projections.

Thanks to cost savings, we are now only about $9,000 away from being able to complete all of the flooring in the basement. The Oversight Team will meet shortly to make final recommendations, but thank you for your donations, patience and excitement!

More pictures are now available on the website: http://www.trinityucity.org/PicPages/Construction2010.html.

Construction Update
[Trinity]
The shaft walls are being finished and flooring in the upstairs area will be laid in about 2 weeks. The cost to re-route 2 water pipes found in the shaft will be significantly less than we originally thought.

Construction Update
[Trinity]
The walls of the shaft are being built this week and next and all inspections by various U City and state inspectors are going well. We are still on target for project completion by the end of the year. Thanks for your patience and ability to follow the blue tape!
Restore & Renew: Where We Stand
[Trinity]

By the end of the year we will be a congregation that has a more accessible, safer, and more welcoming building. The good news: we're moving closer to our goal every day and are financially on target.

We have come across very few structural surprises, have a strong working relationship with our contractors, and have been pleased with the cost savings in many parts of the project. In fact, McGrath is estimating:

  • that we will save at least $21,000 out of the $57,000 contracted for tower work,
  • elevator electrical upgrade costs will probably be about $2,200 less than budgeted,
  • and the boiler is in and about $1,100 under budget.

This list doesn't even include the fact that our current flooring bid-if we are able to complete that part of the project-is now between $12,400 and $27,000 under the original $52,000 price originally shared with the congregation (depending on how much square footage we choose to cover).Given these savings, and a current pledged amount of $466,476, we are actually about only $40,000 below the amount needed to complete ALL aspects of our campaign.

The demolition went smoothly. The pit was blessedly empty of leaking oil/hydraulic fluid and our savings thus far easily covered the re-routing of a pipe unexpectedly found in the pit.The steel rebar is now in and the shaft foundation concrete is being poured in phases this week.Rebuilding has begun! The asbestos remediation will be finished next Monday and window work on the tower (the final part of the tower project) will be scheduled soon.

Bob Little and Mark O'Bryan, who have worked on many large construction projects, are pleased at how close we are staying to our time line and budget.Construction completion dates are always fluid, but McGrath expects to be finished around the end of the year. For safety reasons, they will not be opening the central staircase until the end of the construction project, so we will all be experts at following the blue tape and purple signs until the unveiling of the new elevator and gathering area!Thank you for your patience during, and excitement about, our movement forward with this project and as a congregation. After this, the good, hard work begins of living into our calling to be this church, in this place, at this time.
Construction Update: Building Has Begun!
[Trinity]
I will write a longer update next week, but suffice it to say that we are on budget for the elevator, significantly under budget for the tower work, pleased to find no oil in the pit and happy that asbestos clean-up is almost complete. A pipe unexpectedly found in the pit has been re-routed with minimal disruption to the time line. More details next week. Check out the construction calendar and updated construction pictures.
Making God More Accessible
[Trinity]
Our current construction project is about Trinity providing a safer and more welcoming building, not just about being more accessible for those who need an elevator. But as staff and the Worship & Music Commission talk about how both our building and worship can be more inclusive for those with physical and mental challenges, I found this article on accessibility and inclusivity in houses of worship to be interesting.
