Opportunities to Serve

God's Child Project: February 20 - March 1, 2012
[Trinity]

A team from St. Louis is going to Antigua, Guatemala, from Feb. 20 - March 1, 2012 to build houses and teach skills to the poor. Pat Courtney and Nancy and Bob Wagoner will be joining the group from Trinity. Each member of the team will be able to take 2 large suitcases, one for his own clothes and one for donated items. Between now and February 12th (when the items will be packed at Trinity), you can help by donating the following items:

Items for the Malnutrition Center

  • Soap
  • Shampoo
  • Diapers, especially small ones or preemie size
  • Plastic pants to cover the diapers - these can be found at Walmart

Items for the God's Child School children

  • Clothing, shoes
  • Rulers (metric measurement) pencils, hand-held sharpeners, crayons-the best place to get these is the Dollar Store
  • Personal products, tooth paste, tooth brushes, combs, wash cloths, etc.
  • no pads of paper or notebooks - too heavy
  • no markers - they dry out

Sewing / Knitting / Crocheting Supplies for the Mothers:

  • Pinking shears, scissors, thread, hand-sewing needles, straight pins
  • Cloth/plastic tape measures (metric) small and medium-sized buttons
  • Embroidery thread and needles
  • Colorful yarn and crochet hooks (especially some of the biggest sizes you can get-size p or larger)
  • Knitting needles, all sizes, but especially large sizes, (especially 13, 15, or 17)

Items for the Clinic:

  • Bandages, sterile tape, gauze
  • Vitamins, non-prescription medicine, samples

Old, lightweight suitcases with weels would be greatly appreciated! They will be left in Guatemala. We will need $40.00 to pay for each suitcase which contains donated items. In addition, the team plans to build bunk beds for the houses we build, so we'll need some cash to enable us pay for these things.

Monetary gifts are preferred in the form of a check made out to Trinity. On the 'memo' line write out that it is intended for the God's Child Project, so that cash can be provided to the team to be taken to Guatemala and converted to the local currency. Checks given to the church will be accounted for as are all standard contributions and pledges. A receipt that can be used for 2012 tax deductions will be supplied for monetary gifts not given through the church, or non-monetary contributions as desired.

Sewing Machines are also needed:

The team plans to take older, metal sewing machines to Guatemala. The machines need to be fairly simple, not ones which have computers in them or do fancy stitches. They should also be in working order. If you know of a machine like this, please contact me, Pat Lobdell at 314-821-0104, by February 5th, and I can come and get it. We can take the machines in our carry-on luggage on the plane, so the shipping costs us nothing.

It's Turkey Time! Help the Food Pantry Families
[Trinity]

On November 16th, we will distribute turkeys to our food pantry families. Thanks to your generosity, we gave out more than 100 last Thanksgiving. A donation of $12 buys one turkey. Financial donations are more useful than actual turkeys so we can buy in bulk. I need either a donation or a commitment of a coming donation by NOV. 4 so I can place the turkey order.

Take Leftover Bread and Donate "Dough"
[Trinity]

Periodically, leftover food pantry donations from the Bread Co. will be available for members after worship. Please leave a donation if you are able. All funds will go to our food pantry.

Educational Fund: Student Supplies, Transformational Academic Journeys through Babysitting!
[Trinity]

I have dreams of taking my first generation college students on an academic field trip to colleges/universities. I also want to be able to provide them with educational resources on a daily basis in class that their families are not able to equip them with. As a result, I am beginning to babysit when free, day or night. I have time this summer to start!

All earnings will go towards educational expenses for my inner city students. If you would like to support my cause, feel free to call me up and see if I am free to babysit! I will be out of town June 30th- July 6th and July 19th- August 1st. After Sunday, August 7th I can only babysit at night because the school year begins. Thanks for your support!

Mission Trip to Guatemala in mid-June
[Trinity]

We are working on plans to go on a mission trip this June to Guatemala to work with God's Child. This mission trip is open to Middle School Youth, High School Youth, and adults. Right now we are gauging interest. Once we hear back from interested persons in the next week, we will make a decision as to whether there are enough participants to make the trip work.

Approximate dates:

June 16 - June 24 (this is the week we will go, but the dates may be adjusted a day in either direction)

Who can go:

  • Middle School Youth (Middle School youth must be accompanied by a parent. We also ask the Middle School youth be strong enough physically to do four days of work and to be mature enough to deal with living in a different culture for 8-10 days. Parents can decide if they believe that their youth are up to this trip.)

  • High School Youth (If enough High School aged youth (rising 9th graders through rising college freshmen) sign up, they will have come separate group time while we are in Guatemala.

  • Adults

Cost:

approx. $750 per person - this is about 50% of the usual cost of a mission trip with God's Child in Guatemala (In order to make the trip affordable, the Session has set aside funds to help defray the cost of the trip. If you have the means to pay entire cost of the trip (approx. $1500), we ask that you not request a scholarship. We would like everyone who has interest to go, so if you cannot afford $750 fee, please contact Dan Anderson-Little to discuss additional financial assistance. We also have some fund-raising ideas to further lower costs.)

Leader:

Rev. Dan Anderson-Little

What do we do on this Mission Trip:

  • Help build a house for a homeless family (this is a four day project)

  • Visit service projects run by God's Child

  • Reflect on what we are learning

  • Share the love of Christ with others

What you will need to go:

  • A passport

  • An up-to-date tetanus shot

To learn more:

We will have an informational session next Sunday, March 6 after worship. The mission team that is going to Guatemala in early March is sponsoring a lunch and a packing party in the Dining Room immediately following worship. Come to the lunch to have your questions answered and stay to help pack supplies.

Project ARK Toy Drive
[Trinity]

Liz Nelson is coordinating Trinity's participation with Project ARK (AIDS/HIV Resources and Knowledge) in their efforts to collect toys and funds for Kids, an annual toy drive for over 1,000 children affected by HIV/AIDS in the St. Louis Metro area.

What Can You Do?

  • Collect new, unwrapped toys for children ages 1-14 years.
  • Collect gift certificates to area vendors to assist with toy drive shopping.
  • Make a monetary donation to the Holiday Gold for Kids Toy Drive.

Why?

  • The children you are helping are living with the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS.
  • The toys you give them will most likely be the only toys they receive this holiday season.
  • The Holiday Gold for Kids Toy Drive provides hope to many during the holiday season!

When?

Monday, November 26 - Friday, December 21, 2007

Due to popular suggestion, we have provided a wish list for each age group receiving toys through our
annual Toy Drive. Please note, these are only suggestions and we are grateful for all gifts donated!

"Equality in Missouri - An Update on Legislative Actions"

Did you know that in St. Louis County gay people can still be fired from their job, denied housing, and access to public accommodations, such as retirement facilities? Our speaker from PROMO, Missouri's statewide organization that advocates for LGBT equality, will speak on efforts to extend non-discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Trinity's Session publicly supported PROMO's safe Schools Act work last year. See www.PROMOonline.org for more information. Adult education class: Sunday, October 30, 9:30am, Weems Chapel. Andrew Shaughnessy, St. Louis Regional Field Organizer, PROMO

Amanda's shameless plea for St. Jude donations
[Trinity]

When I decided to raise money for Special Olympics by jumping into a lake in the middle of winter, you supported me...more than I ever could have imagined! This year, I have decided to raise money for a new cause, and in a way that helps both me AND the cause I'm working for. In December, I will participate in a half marathon for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

If you had asked me a year ago about participating in a half marathon, I would have thought you were crazy. Honestly, I thought that a 5K was far enough. Now, I have reached a point where not only am I willing to train for a half marathon, I'm excited to do it! I'm 6 weeks into the "Couch to 5K" running program (as of July), and so far my longest run has been 20 minutes with no walking. I have no intention of running the entire 13.1 miles, but I'm excited to see just how much I can build up my endurance by December. That's how this endeavor is going to help me, personally.

On a much bigger level, this race is supporting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Who among us wouldn't like to help a child in need? The thing I like most about St. Jude is that no child is denied treatment because of a family's inability to pay. It is truly a cause that I can support!

Danny Thomas believed that "no child should die in the dawn of life." Please make a donation to support my efforts for St. Jude and join the fight against childhood cancer. Anything you can give would be greatly appreciated, both by me and by the children that are helped by St. Jude! You can find me online at www.mystjudeheroes.org/ameinen.

CHAT Update
[Trinity]
Former Trinity youth leader Rhonda Dunbar's latest adventures with CHAT: Church Hill Activities & Tutoring...

Dear Family and Friends,

Spring was quite eventful for staff and students at the Academy. Before spring break, students visited Mary Washington University and Howard University in the Washington D.C. area. Other students had the opportunity to visit the sculpture department at Virginia Commonwealth University and see a play at the University of Richmond. Fridays have been hands-on learning field trips. The attached picture is of CHA Junior, Tre Davis rocking a Santa apron during "Cooking your math". In addition, we have finished up the end of the year testing. Look at the attached CHAT newsletter to see a progress summary.

The theme that has been prevalent over and over again this spring has been atmosphere. In April, myself and the other leaders of our LOVE (Ladies of virtue and excellence) bible study had a formal dinner for our fifth, sixth, and seventh grade girls. The idea was to allow our girls to have some bonding time while being served a three-course dinner on a Friday evening by their leaders. We lighted candles, set the table using cloth napkins, place cards, and wine glasses (for sparkling grape juice), and had jazz music playing when the girls arrived. Our girls have energy and normally when they arrive at my home I can hear them outside before they even enter the house, but this night was very different. Five of the girls came inside the house and I didn't even realize they had arrived until the adult that had driven them came into the kitchen. All four us leaders could not believe it watching our girls quietly eat hors d'oeuvres and later making a toast while drinking their sparkling grape juice. Yes, there was spilling of spaghetti sauce on a white shirt and they became louder as the evening progressed, but the point was made. We set an atmosphere in which adult behavior was the norm and waited on our girls as servant leaders. Our girls demonstrated that they can be ladies and our hope and prayer is that our girls will be ladies of virtue and excellence in every aspect of their lives even when there is not jazz music playing in the background and we are not with them. Please keep our girls and all of our participants in your prayers that God will work in their hearts to be young men and women of virtue.

I have officially been on staff with CHAT for one full year and I am excited to share that I have 100% of my support pledged. While I was hesitant regarding fundraising, but I have learned a lot about my relationship with God and have enjoyed sharing my ministry with all of you. Thank you for your faithfulness through your prayers and donations and for making this experience one of growth for me.

Our fiscal year begins in September and I am beginning fund development for the 2011-2012 school year. Please pray about continuing to financially support me in the new school year. All checks can be made out to CHAT with "Rhonda Dunbar" in the memo. Please let me know if you will be in the area and want to visit us or would like talk to me to learn more about CHAT and the Academy. I will be in the Midwest both in June and August and would love to share stories in person. Thank you for all of your prayer and financial support! I am excited to be continuing with CHAT and to see how God will continue to work through all of CHAT's ministries.

Peace,
Rhonda

How to Sponsor a God's Child Student
[Trinity]
After the Guatemala mission trip group presented their experiences in worship a few weeks ago, I wanted to learn more about a comment Bob Wagoner made that anyone can sponsor a child in the God's Child program. I can't do the physical work necessary on the actual mission trip to Guatemala, but perhaps my family can sponsor a child attending the Dream Center or another school connected to the program.

I called God's Child and found out how easy it is:
  • The cost to sponsor one child for a month is between $60-$120 a month, depending on their age and where they live (foster care or with their family)
  • up to 4 people can sponsor one child, so any amount is helpful
  • Kids can stay in the program as long as they are in school--from young children to those in college or graduate school
  • the money helps cover tuition cost/teacher's salary for the child, the costs of dental and medical coverage at the Dreamer's Center, and the administration of the "Mother's Club," where women come once a week for fresh fruit and veggies and clothing
  • you can request a boy or a girl or one of the hardest children to place--the older children (on the "emergency list"). A packet of information about your child and a picture will be sent
  • you will receive correspondence 2 times a year from your child and can write to them as often as you'd like (letters in English will be translated for the child)
  • Money for a birthday gift can be sent, but not an actual gift, due to infrequent package deliveries to the area
  • All you have to do is send the following information to Melissa.Leingang@GodsChild.org :
    • Your name, address
    • amount you want to donate monthly
    • Boy? Girl? Age?
If you have questions, you can speak with God's Child staff at 701-255-7956.

Rhonda and Shante

We have been quite busy with many activities and events. A couple of week ago was Spirit Week at the Academy. My favorite day was dress like a student/teacher. A junior at the Academy named Shange told me on Monday that she was going to dress like me. We exchanged clothes and after Shange assisted me with adjusting her hat the look was perfected. The picture attached is of Shange and me as each other. Shange told me that was her best "Rhonda smile". Last week was our 4th annual "I have a dream event" that we co-sponsor with another non-profit, the Youth Life Foundation. There were videos, speeches, and performances from the participants of both organizations.

Spring is looking to be just as busy as the winter. A service team of 24 students from the University of Richmond and Old Dominion University will be spending their Spring Break with CHAT starting March 7th. Then the next week, we will have a group from Virginia Commonwealth University spending their week with us. If you or your church is interested in spending a day, a weekend, or week with CHAT contact me or our Service Group Coordinator, Mackenzie Mumey at (804) 236-4964. Another upcoming event is that the Academy will be having our spring open house on March 31st at 8:00 a.m.If you are in the Richmond area and interested in attending please contact me or Caitlin Barnes (caitlin.delconte@churchhillacademy.org) for more information.

A quick financial update, I currently have just under $15,000 pledged and have received just under $14,000 of my $20,000 goal. Thank you all for your continued financial and prayer support. Please continue to pray for my financial support. In addition, please pray for the new LOVE Bible study that Sarah Craven, Listwella Donaldson, Stacey Kent and I are starting for 5th and 6th grade girls. We are excited about how God is going to use all of us in these new relationships.

Peace and Love,
Rhonda Dunbar

Coffee & Art: An Artful Combo
[Trinity]
My name is Barry Larson and my in-laws are Don and Patti Twellman (ok, call me a name-dropper).

I also roast for ArtHouse Coffees. Responsibly grown and fair-traded fine green coffee is locally roasted in tiny batches so it's fresh for the best flavor. It's compost-ably and artfully packaged for fun, and sold to provide funding for the Turner Center for the Arts in Maplewood.

At the TCA, artists with a disability make art. Their cost for attending is very low thanks to coffee sales and the generosity of others. Magic happens at the TCA. Friends are made, art skills are developed and community is built one brush stroke at a time. Trinity Presbyterian has been buying ArtHouse Coffee for quite a while now. You may have tasted it without knowing it!

ArtHouse Coffees and the Turner Center for the Arts are inseparable. It's that relationship that has helped me to take my fascination and excitement for coffee further than my own kitchen. The operation is in the micro-tiny category but has grown over the last year to include sales in two local grocery stores, one church and many subscriber households. Recently we were honored by being asked to provide the coffee for the Missouri Organic Association's conference in Springfield and a fair trade fair at a college in central Illinois.

We feature coffee from Central America, Indonesia and Africa and 100% of the proceeds go to the Turner Center for the Arts! If you are interested in learning more and maybe ordering some good cause coffee call me at 314-306-7626 or go to our website: www.arthousecoffees.com.

Thanks for your support!

Trinity's Copier Changes Lives!
[Trinity]

Greetings, Trinity family!

Thanks so much for continuing to give my teacher, Mrs. G-A (Anna Moffatt Gardner-Andrews), the privilege of making copies on the church copier. This is a blessing for us.We need these materials to have a great educational experience in her classroom. Here's an update of what we're doing in class right now.

We just finished reading the amazing play, Romeo and Juliet. We learned about this play in an outgoing manner by acting it out, reading the original script, and watching modern movie clip interpretations. The story of Romeo and Juliet really relates to us even in the year 2011.These scenes happen today.People fall in deep love and they beef (fight) over family and neighborhoods.I have learned that love at first sight can really happen. Also, love can bring people great joy, but also bring them great misery. If I never read this play, I might never know the meaning of true love or friendship.Romeo and Mercutio's relationship reminds me of the close platonic bond I share with my own friends.

Thanks again for helping my teacher out.We are so grateful! God bless! Sincerely,

Warren Terrell

"Do Justice" Team Solicits Mission Project/Organization Proposals from Congregation
[Trinity]

Trinity Presbyterian Church has a strong commitment to mission and outreach in our community and around the world. We recognize that mission is not simply writing checks, but getting our members involved in the mission.

To that end, the Do Justice Team, the group at Trinity that oversees mission allocations, invites Trinity members to submit proposals for mission involvement for the congregation. This can be a project that you are personally involved in either through work or volunteering. We also recognize that some organizations need funding and don't have many ways for volunteers to be involved. You are welcome to submit a proposal for those projects, but our desire is largely to fund projects that our members can also be involved in. Do Justice meets the first Monday night of the month.

Please fill out this form and either submit it to the Church Office or bring it to present in person at the next Do Justice meeting.
